For severe and chronic forms of acne, the formation of scars is characteristic, which are found at the site of small papules and pustules. Acne scarring occurs in about 30% of people with acne. All scars are formed from the fact that connective tissue replaces parts of the skin destroyed by inflammation. There are 2 groups of scars: hypertrophic and atrophic. In hypertrophic scars, more new scar tissue is formed than has been destroyed. This tissue protrudes above the surface of the skin.
